In Fear is not this type of horror film at all. A mixture of fantastical rock opera and horror movie spoof, this film begins when a couple of ordinary, clean-cut kids have car trouble one dark rainy night and knock on the door of a looming gothic mansion. The horror film declined to B-movie status during the 1940s as a result of the real horrors of the war and therefore ceased to command wide audiences or critical respect. The sound of cleft hooves walking along the floorboards wakes me at night sometimes I hear them in my room along with bestial breathing and panting in the darkness.

The Film: Mike Leigh’s finest film is his funniest and his most painful. She has been depicted in several plays and TV dramas, including RTE's Insurrection. The cast mostly mug outrageously - Duffy is probably too broad even for this - but Wallace and Michael Hughes deliver surprisingly decent work. His characters are complex and multi faceted. But if I can highlight at least a few female writers who make readers take a second look, my women of horror features will come full circle.
