Horses were often use as the motive power before steam, and initially on railroads it was not uncommon for the horses to be used initially. In 1872, the A&NL completed construction of 20 miles of track between Brillion and a point one mile east of Appleton. (RLHS 1937, p 8 and 11) On December 10, 1875, the A&NL sold a one-mile section of its line in Appleton to the organizers of the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railway. (RLHS 1937, p 16) The Baraboo Airline Railroad was incorporated on March 8, 1870.
