The wagonways were engineered so that trains of coal wagons could descend to the staithe by gravity, being braked by a brakesman who would "sprag" the wheels by jamming them. The Western Railroad was founded to connect the Boston and Worcester Railroad to the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad on the New York State Line. On November 16th 1880, the Niagara Falls & Lake Ontario Railroad was leased to the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad Company. Potts, Dean of the Southern Methodist School of Law, in his "Railroad Transportation in Texas," ten other railway building projects were started between 1851 and the outbreak of the Civil War.
